Object:Pocketwatch belonging to J. C. Lettsom, 1774-1802

This watch by Thomas Wagstaffe has gold plated inner and outer cases with a silver casing for the mechanism bearing the name of the owner, J. C. Lettsom. Only the wealthy could afford pocketwatches in the eighteenth century. They were the most intricate mechanical devices made for sale and represented the highest quality of mechanical work then performed. Outer case dimensions: diameter 55 mm, depth 24 mm.
