Object:Meerschaum tobacco pipe, Bavarian, 1790-1840

Pipe with carved horn stem and silver mounts. Clay pipes were by far the most common type used in Britain during the eighteenth century. Their price was within the reach of most people. The larger pipes have bowls made of meerschaum, a type of soft stone that is easily carved.
