Gold pocketwatch with chain and case by Mackay and Chrisholm. This watch was possibly owned by James Symes, Lister's father-in-law, and is hallmarked 1768. Only the wealthy could afford pocketwatches in the eighteenth century. They were the most intricate mechanical devices made for sale and represented the highest quality of mechanical work then performed. Case dimensions: length 104 mm, width 86 mm, height 35 mm.
