Object:Early hand-powered lock stitch sewing machine, c.1885

In the late 1860s sewing machines began to be made specially for use in the home. This design of lock stitch machine, by the Wheeler and Wilson Manufacturing Company, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA, was introduced in c.1867. It is made of polished wood, cast iron, steel and wrought iron.
