During the nineteenth century surgeons were increasingly ambitious, risking operations on internal organs and delving deeper into the interior of our body. Consequently, a large number of specialised instruments were developed for such invasive work. This set was made by Arnold and Sons, London. The construction shows they were made before the acceptance of the need for sterilisation of instruments in the years after 1867.
