Object:Bronze pestle and mortar, European, c.1750

Large, light-coloured bronze pestle and mortar. The mortar is decorated and has a wide flared rim, straight sides and two rounded handles. The pestle has a decorated shaft. These common devices were used to crush lumpy or crystalline substances, or to bruise roots and rhizomes.
